August 31, 2010 - Consolidated B-24 Liberator
A Consolidated B-24 Liberator was modified for studies on the effects of inflight icing on all aerosurfaces such as the wings, tail, engine cowling, nose, props, and antenna. The aircraft operated from the NACA Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

The F-102 was the first operational supersonic interceptor and delta-wing fighter of the USAF. First flight 1953.

Twin-engine, long range, single-seat interceptor aircraft. The project was cancelled after this sole prototype was destroyed by an engine fire. First flight 1944.

The Convair F-106 Delta Dart was the primary all-weather interceptor aircraft for the United States Air Force from the 1960s through the 1980s. First flight 1956.

August 16, 2010 - Vought F7U-1 Cutlass
Launch of the first production Vought F7U-1 Cutlass from the aircraft carrier USS Midway on 23 July 1951. It was the only landing of an F7U-1 on a carrier, as the pilot's visibility was so poor that he could not see the flight deck during the landing.

Experimental aircraft that tested a forward-swept wing, canard control surfaces, and other novel aircraft technologies. The aerodynamic instability of this arrangement increased agility but required the use of computerized fly-by-wire control. First flight 1984.

August 13, 2010 - Morane-Saulnier Type N
French monoplane fighter aircraft of the First World War. Used wing warping instead of ailerons.
The Type N mounted a single unsynchronized forward-firing machine gun which used the deflector wedges in order to fire through the propeller arc.
Later removed, the large metal spinner designed to streamline the aircraft caused the engines to overheat because the spinner deflected air away from the engine.

August 12, 2010 - North American F-107A
The North American F-107 was North American Aviation's entry in a United States Air Force tactical fighter-bomber design competition of the 1950s. The F-107 incorporated many innovations and radical design features, and was based on the F-100 Super Sabre. The competition was eventually won by the F-105 Thunderchief, and the F-107 prototypes ended their lives as test aircraft.
First flight 1956.

Single seat, long range escort fighter that combined use of both a turbojet and a turboprop engines. The lack of a suitable engine combined with the end of World War II doomed the project. First flight 1945.

The F-84 Thunderjets were the first aircraft to fly with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration team. First flight 1946.

The Grumman S-2 Tracker (previously S2F) was the first purpose-built, single airframe anti-submarine warfare aircraft to enter service with the US Navy. First flight 1952.

August 3, 2010 - Bristol Beaufort
British large twin-engined torpedo bomber. Although designed as a torpedo-bomber it more often flew as a level-bomber. The Beaufort also flew more hours in training than on operational missions and more were lost through accidents and mechanical failures than were lost to enemy fire. First flight 1938.

After replacement of its landing gear at NASA Dryden, NASA's Super Guppy Turbine cargo plane takes off from Edwards AFB to return to the Johnson Space Center.
In the 1960s, Aero Spacelines modified several Stratocruisers to make oversized transports, dubbed "Guppys". The first of these was the Pregnant Guppy, followed by the Super Guppy, and finally the Mini Guppy.
